IERC Facilities

Currently, the instrumentation of the IERC is housed in laboratories at the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of Illinois. The main IERC facilities are housed the basement of the Medical Sciences Building (MSB). Other facilities are housed in Noyes Laboratory (NL).

IERC instrumentation located in MSB:

  • Bruker ElexSys E-580 FT-EPR X-band EPR spectrometer; includes DICE ENDOR with both CW ENDOR cavity and pulsed probe (pulsed probe has optical window), EIN A300 RF power amplifier, 0.3 to 35 MHz and EN377 RF power amplifier, 100 kHz to 250 MHz., Oxford CF935 cryostat with optical window, CW Q-band (ca. 35 GHz) bridge with Q-band low temperature probe with optical light pipe, Super Hi-Q Resonator, ER 4107 Cylindrical Rotating Resonator, ER4104OR optical resonator, 4105DR dual cavity, Gaussmeter and field frequency lock, Goniometer.
  • Varian E-line 12" Century Series X-band CW EPR(2); E257 Variable temperature accessories(2), APD helium cryostat(1), Field frequency lock(2), E232 dual sample cavities(2), E236 dual mode cavities(2), E238 TM110 cavity(1), Loop gap resonator(1), E500 Gaussmeters(2), Frequency meters(2), E-229 Goniometer(1), zero-field sweep through power supply(1).
  • Varian E-line 15" Q-band CW EPR; magnetic fields to 2T, rotating base for single crystal work, extended range frequency meter, IERC-developed U-band (ca. 48 GHz) CW EPR bridge.
  • IERC-developed L-band (ca. 1.3 GHz) EPR bridge; with loop gap resonator and surface probe, Metrolab low field gaussmeter.
  • IERC-developed W-band (94 GHz) spectrometer; with wide-bore wide-sweep (0 to 7 T) superconducting magnet, CF1200 liq. He sample cryostat, extended range EIP frequency counter, Metrolab high field gaussmeter.

IERC instrumentation located in NL:

  • Varian E-line 9" X-band EPR.
  • Pulsed S-band EPR (ca. 2-4 GHz) instrument developed and built at IERC.

Offsite instrumentation:

  • Varian E-4 X-band CW EPR spectrometer.
  • REKAR NMR relaxometer with low-field pulsed DNP (dynamic nuclear polarization).

Laboratory space and instrumentation available for sample preparation include the appropriate equipment for a range of medical, chemical, and biochemical preparations. In addition, the University of Illinois has one of the best scientific library collections in the country and well-stocked storerooms and makes service facilities available to the IERC. There is a charge for use of each of these facilities, but certain of these charges are at a University-subsidized rate, substantially lower than commercial rates.
